PETER MCCLUSKEY from the Victorian Lime Producers Association reports on the latest happenings of the VLPA.

THE VLPA is continuing to monitor the likely changes to the Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act along with other industry associations to endeavour to achieve a workable result for our industry.

STATE CONFERENCE

The VLPA held a successful AGM and conference at the Warrnambool Bowls Club on 23rd November 2009. A number of important matters to the industry were considered with guest speakers covering topics such as climate outlook, fertiliser regulatory framework at state and national level, Victorian Government’s Future Farming project, and moves by certain agri-business industry bodies to restore and enhance the productivity of pastures. The VLPA’s role in some upcoming work to combat soil acidifi cation in Victoria was also considered.

NATIONAL CONFERENCE

The National Aglime Association’s AGM and conference was this year held in Victoria at Yarra Glen and included a site tour of the Unimin operation at Lilydale. Matters of concern at a national level were considered at the conference such as Commonwealth inquiries, product integrity, climate change and seasonal conditions affecting agribusiness.

The NAA conference recognised the need to monitor the burgeoning Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) policy environment and its relevance to agricultural industry activities. It is considered the use of soil conditioners provide increased agricultural productivity and a possible more greenhouse gas efficient method of agricultural production compared to the lower productivity regime where no soil conditioner is used.
