ERR Compliance Changes
JUDY SCOTT, Chief Inspector outlines some changes within Earth Resources Regulation (ERR).
Over the last 12 months, ERR has undertaken a review of the compliance operating model – identifying what works, what could be improved on and how we can better align ourselves as a modern, fit for purpose regulator.
A number of improvements have been identified, including making better use of the compliance team resources, ensuring risks are appropriately managed across the state and streamlining practices within the regulator.
A key change to the compliance operating model is that ERR is aiming to improve consistency of regulatory outcomes across the state, so no matter what region, or inspector you may be dealing with, industry will receive a consistent, appropriate and transparent outcome.
Part of this change has resulted in the 5 previous ERR regions (North West, North East, South West, Metro & Gippsland) being consolidated into 3 new regions – North, East and West, with the base locations of each as Bendigo, Morwell and Ballarat respectively.
Each region now has a Deputy Chief Inspector (replacing the previous Regional Manager roles) who will be managing the regional activities and the introduction of a Statewide team that will be identifying risks across the state, making better use of regulatory intelligence to plan compliance activities and ensuring that the ERR inspectorate is kept up to date on required training and skills development.
The change in the ERR structure and future direction has resulted in a number of staff changes within the group. ERR is currently undertaking a recruitment campaign to fill a number of positions, so I ask for your patience as we get the team re-established.
