Are you dealing with asbestos correctly? EPA will be checking

By on October 20, 2025

The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and Victorian Building Authority (VBA) have a shared goal of preventing harm to the community from asbestos. We’re working with the construction and demolition industries to ensure you:

  • Understand your obligations
  • Safely manage your risks

EPA investigates and enforces
Safe transport and disposal of asbestos waste is a priority for Victoria’s regulators. EPA charged 6 operators and issued $62,000 in fines in the past year. Each case involved at least one of the following:

  • Improper asbestos waste management
  • Illegal disposal
  • Not having EPA Waste Tracker Waste records

Waste records show EPA the asbestos has gone to a lawful location and not dumped on the side of the road or in our parks.

EPA investigates allegations and track building permits, major projects and other asbestos removal works. EPA knows where asbestos is likely to come from and take action when this doesn’t align with EPA Waste Tracker records.

Working together to prevent harm
EPA, VBA and other regulators are working together to identify potential waste crime.

By tracking asbestos waste correctly, you are part of the network that is taking rogue operators out of your industry.

Protect yourself
Preventing harm and reducing risks to your business is simple.

Classify all waste correctly
Misclassifying waste puts your operation at risk. Whether intentional or an oversight, you can face substantial fines or
further prosecution.

Ensure contractor compliance
Waste producers must ensure their contractors properly use Waste Tracker. This applies to all movement and disposal of asbestos waste. Check the EPA public register to confirm your contractors have the correct permission.

Log all transport and disposal in Waste Tracker
Never transport or accept contaminated materials without appropriate Waste Tracker records. This includes asbestos. Tracking the movement and disposal of dangerous waste:

  • Protects the community
  • Informs decision makers on how to support the industry

Failing to complete a waste record is an infringeable offense. Financial penalties start at $9,880 per offense for a body corporate.

Report malpractice
Rogue operators undermine legitimate businesses and put the safety of the community at risk. Report malpractice anonymously online or by calling 1300 372 842.

Compliance through documentation
Maintaining thorough records is the simplest method of demonstrating compliance. Accurate documentation is evidence that you understand your responsibilities and are meeting them.
