Burdetts Celebrate 25 Years

For 25 years, Burdetts Sand, Soil & Stone (often under the Burdetts / Burdett’s / Burdett Sands banner) has been more than just a supplier of raw materials across Victoria and beyond. Its membership in the Construction Material Processors Association (CMPA) reflects not only longevity, but a deep commitment to industry standards, innovation, and quality service. As Burdetts celebrates a quarter century with CMPA, it’s a fitting moment to reflect on where they’ve come from, what they have achieved, and where they are located today.

Burdetts Sand Soil and Stone have been in operation since 1974. Started By Andrews Parents, Pearl and Bill Burdett, with hard work, vision, and a deep commitment to their community. Andrew grew up immersed in it. Watching his parents put everything into building something meaningful. From a small yard on Gardeners Road in Langwarrin to their multi-site business they run now.

Andrew leads the business with the same passion and values they passed down. From his day-to-day tasks as managing director to jumping in a machine, truck or answering the phone to take orders. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it, because for Andrew, it’s about more than just work. It’s about family, legacy and the community.

Some of Andrew’s own daughters now work in the business too, continuing the tradition and bringing fresh energy to a proud family legacy. He has 4 daughters, and they have all had a place in the business at some point in time, from helping in the nursery and gift shop from a young age to accounts and general business operation management. Laura Burdett has been a part of the business for the last 5 years. Working on various things from General business Operations, to helping streamline various processes and bring the business into a more paperless and efficient work force.

“I don’t think you’ll find anyone who works as hard, or as much as he does and if people say they do I don’t believe it. He is extremely hands on, the staff love it and so do our customers.” Laura on her dad’s hard work and commitment to the business day in and day out.

For Andrew, a family business means honouring the past, staying grounded in the present, and building a future where family and community are always at the heart of it.

The business itself is of broad operations, from buying raw material, mixing, blending, screening and turning into a finished product, to just general freight work moving loose bulk material from A – B across South Australia, Melbourne, NSW and over the border into QLD.

We run a fleet of close to 90 trucks, ranging from 1m tippers, concrete agis to 120m3 A doubles that mainly go interstate week in and week out. Burdetts rely on all their service partners to ensure the business is always running as smooth and efficient as possible, with little to no downtime.

Burdetts spans over 5 sites. The retail/concrete yard and head office based in Langwarrin, wholesale Quarry in Langwarrin, wholesale yard in Cranbourne East and two active quarries in Lang Lang and Hallston. Across these sites they do it all from, washing and blending turf sands for sports oval, making bunker sand for golf courses, including The Royal Sydney Golf Course and holding various other materials for resell.

Burdetts doesn’t just extract, it reclaims. Through its “Recover, Reclaim, Recycle, Re use” program, the company treats waste as material to be transformed. That includes material from cuttings, basement digs, construction sites that are assessed for their best use. Depending on the results, they are reused as brick sands, filter sands, or construction sand, sometimes after washing or screening. Recycling unscreened and unwanted soils, with trommel and reclaiming screens, Burdetts can process material at its own sites and maximises the reuse of materials.

Mack Trucks and CMV truck and Bus have been a big part of Burdetts since the 90’s. With a large number of the fleet being Mack trucks, they rely of their fuel efficiency and forever striving to be the best of the best and built tough.

“We rely heavily on their expertise to keep our trucks on the road and leave little to no down time for our customers. It’s the afterhours servicing and the extra mile they go to ensure we can get that truck back on the road the next day and back to normal operations and gives us the ability to stick to a schedule that we promise our customers”. Being part of CMPA for 25 years means being a part of the collective voice of Victoria’s hard‐rock, sand, gravel, soil, and redevelopment industries. It’s about shaping standards, safety, sustainability, and having shared knowledge to improve operations across the board
