SAFE HANDLING AND SAFE USE OF EXPLOSIVES COURSE TONGALA—JUNE 04
This course, which has a strong quarry blasting emphasis, will be organised and conducted by Terrock Consulting Engineers, who specialise in blasting and blast vibration control. The course will be held at the ‘Golden Cow’, Tongala, with field work at Mawsons Lake Cooper Quarry, on Thursday 10th, Friday 11th, Wednesday 16th, Thursday 17th and Friday 18th June 2004.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
The course will instruct participants in the characteristics of explosives and the safe and efficient methods of handling, using and transporting explosives. The course will give a strong emphasis to face and blasthole surveying, flyrock control, and the effect of blast parameters on airblast and ground vibration emissions. This course has been designed for persons who wish to apply for Licences to Use Explosives issued under the authority of the Dangerous Goods Act, the Mineral Resources Development Act, and the Extractive Industries Development Act. It is an Approved Course under the Dangerous Goods (Explosives) Regulations 2000, and the mines and quarry regulations. The course is organised and conducted by experienced blasting engineers, specialising in blasting and the environmental effects of blasting.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The theoretical sessions include instruction in the following:
- Commercial Explosives and Accessories
- Storage and Transport of Explosives
- Deterioration and Disposal of Explosives
- Charging and Firing Explosives
- Handling Misfires
- Blasting Applications and Practical Blast Design
- Control of Blasting Nuisances and Blast Vibration
- Applicable Blasting and Explosives Regulations
- Face and Blasthole Surveying
- Predictive Assessment of Flyrock and Blast Vibration
Practical sessions will cover face and blasthole surveying, with particular emphasis on interpretation of laser surveying profiles, blasthole priming and loading, and the necessary safety and warning procedures. During these sessions, blast vibration measurements are taken, and the safe disposal of detonators and other explosives is demonstrated. Participants should wear protective clothing for the field exercises that meet the requirements of Victorian legislation.
COURSE OUTLINE
The course consists of both theoretical and practical sessions. On successful completion of the course, the student is presented with a certificate, which will give partial or total exemption from the experience requirements necessary to obtain a Permit or Licence to Use Explosives under the authority of the relevant Dangerous Goods, Extractive Industries, and Mineral Resources Acts.
COURSE FEE $950.00 (GST exempt) per person.
NOTE: Travelling, accommodation and explosive licence fees are additional costs that must be met by the applicant.
NOTE: To comply with the Dangerous Goods Explosives Regulations, participants must be at least 21 years of age.
