Development of Sand Pit Training Resources

Developing training resources for sand plants is nearing completion SARAH ANDREW writes.

IN 2006, the CMPA committed to the development of eight training resources to support training in the area of crushing and screening at an operator level. One of the resources to be developed was ‘Conduct Sand Plant Operations’.

This resource is designed to assist a person who has an understanding of sand plants to be able to more effectively operate their site. This means they are able to carry out the daily checks competently, are able to identify when things aren’t going quite right and are able to carry out basic troubleshooting.

To keep the resource to a reasonable size which can be covered through two days of training, the manual has been developed on the understanding that students will have undertaken both Work Safely and Conduct Screening Operations prior to attending this course.

The manual will however cover matters pertaining to:

  • Preparing for the day’s activities in establishing the required processing needs, monitoring and confirming acceptability of feed, commencing operations, coordinating all settings required to achieve the day’s requirements.
  • Monitoring processing during the day and recording information such as spillage, plant effectiveness and maintenance requirements.
  • Overseeing the discharge of products to ground from the processing system ensuring that material is moved away, backed up and blockages don’t occur.

As with other manuals in the series it will cover capital items that are specific to the topic, for instance:

SCREENS

  • Primary Scalping and Sizing Screen
  • Static Grizzly Screen
  • Vibrating Grizzly Screen
  • Scrubber Trommel Screen

DE-WATERING SCREEN WASHING AND PROCESSING EQUIPMENT

  • Feed Regulating Sump
  • Transferring Sump

PUMPS

  • Water Pumps
  • Slurry Pumps

CLASSIFICATION EQUIPMENT

  • Updraught
  • Hindered Settlement
  • Horizontal

ATTRITIONING AND CLEANING EQUIPMENT

  • Log Washers
  • Scrubbers

HYDROCYCLONES

  • De-watering
  • De-sliming
  • Fines Recovery
  • Stack Out

ANCILLARY EQUIPMENT

  • Conveyors
  • Bins
  • Hoppers

Th is manual is presently being drafted with an invitation to be extended to interested members in the coming month to attend a workshop to discuss the manual and its coverage in more detail.

BURDETT SAND SOIL & STONE

The Burdett Group has been in operation for the past 30 years, during which the business has grown dramatically. In the last 15 years they have complimented their sand supply business with a 7 acre site containing a garden supply outlet, hardware store and complete retail nursery and cafe.

To support these enterprises, they run a considerable transport fleet that readers may have seen throughout the state.

Burdett’s operate three quarries where they extract sand and gravel. These sites are located in the southeastern suburbs and as such are faced with challenges such as urban encroachment. The below picture shows the sand plant a couple of years ago.

The time and effort that Andrew Burdett, Managing Director, has put into the development of all of the training manuals is greatly appreciated.
