Journey to the centre of the crusher

Conduct Crushing Operations training was recently held in Warrnambool had a great attendance, reports NOEL PICKERING, Box Hill TAFE

THE training course for Conduct Crushing Operations MNQOPS221A from the Certificate II in Extractive Industries Operations qualification has run with great success this year.

The turn out has been fantastic and the training locations have taken the course to the far reaches of Victoria to accommodate those that are turning big rocks into smaller rocks amongst the rolling hillsides of regional Victoria.

The course delves into the depths of the inner workings of jaw, cone, gyratory, impact and roll crushers. With the use of computer generated 3D videos, course participants are able to see the inner workings of the crushers for the first time. This has been invaluable for the participants as it cements their understanding of the working principles of the plant they operate daily.

A visit to a crushing operation gives participants the chance to witness types of crushers they may not have previously had experience with.

The last field trip undertaken was a visit to the Cemex’s Tarrone Quarry where Peter Bourke happily fielded questions about all aspects of crushing from 10 eager participants.

Peter raised the lid on his VSI (see photograph below) which gave everyone a first hand insight to the hammers and anvils that smash his aggregates to perfection.

Next year we are hoping to continue the success of this year’s courses and would like to invite all who have not participated to register as soon as you can. Class sizes are limited to 10, in order to give the participants our undivided attention.

Applications to enrol in Certificate IV in Extractive Industries Operations (Supervisor) and Diploma of Extractive Industries Management (Manager) qualifications for 2009 are currently underway.

Interested applicants are asked to contact Box Hill Institute of TAFE for enrolment details. Please telephone Diane Wilson, Centre for Industry Education & Training on (03) 9286 9711 who will be pleased to assist with your enquiries.
